I don't know if a lesser cable would have sufficed. I bought these for a new plasma in a side room. I use them with a Pioneer Tivo series 2 and they serve my purpose.
(I even have a non-audiophile friend who made an unprovoked comment about the THX800-enhanced video-quality). But I STARTED with a pair of $40 "Monster Series-400 mk.II" cables and was ASTONISHED at the superiority of these cables over the unshielded factory cables. I decided to buy these when I upgraded a 600-series video cable to the 800-series of this review. You do, and you get the bug). The 800-series cables are not the best you can buy (I've seen, and not been surprised by, cables costing thousands of dollars per meter), but the biggest difference I noticed was that the static you ever-so-slightly hear in the background of your music or movies VANISHES.
I have used Monster Cable for many years. So I bought six pairs of these on an impulse when I saw their price (the component-video cable I bought cost me $80). As video-quality went, the gentle "up one grade" enhancement made a difference you could SEE. The quality is very high and Monster is always a great value.
To use audiophile-terminology: these cables are VERY neutral, they add nothing to your sound, but they remove most of the distortion. No better value for the stunning price I paid: $15.99 per meter-pair + shipping. As an audiophile, I easily notice a differences between $40, $80, or $160+ stereo-interconnects. This simple, inexpensive cable actually gave me the "Audiophile-Bug (you hear the difference between OEM and $40 cables and wonder to yourself "What if I spend twice as much, or four times, or ten times as much.
I would buy this brand (Monster) from this supplier again. Good quality, delivered on time.
I used to hear a "hiss" noise in the background---it's now gone. I recently started purchasing monster cable products from Amazon's retailers to upgrade my stereo. My stereo is 20 years old and consists of seperate components (preamp, power amps, EQ, range expander, CD/DVD player etc) so I needed some heavy duty cabling to replace the old thin "no name, no blame" connector cabling. Get them while you still can.
Those connectors are not as premium as the THX ULTI800 / 1000 series but they are still very good. Again, Amazon's stellar retailers have these things and they are a good deal for the money. I also used a lot of the Interconnect 400 series to connect the EQ /Tape loop/Range expander portion of the stereo. You can feel and hear the quality in them.
Many retailers don't even carry these things so I decided to snatch them up. What's really cool is how thick these cables are. Their RCA cables may be a thing of the past soon with the advent of HDMI and fiber optic cables. The shielding used in these thick cables is very good.
There was a noticable difference in signal strenght and quality using Monster cabling between all the components. The good news is the price on these premium cables is a lot lower now then when they first came out. I used these cables (the THX ULT-800 and I1000 series) cables to connect the preamp / DSP / poweramps.
